Texas' defensive coaching staff is undergoing a quiet revolution, with a young and innovative coach at the helm. Mark Orphey, a 30-something coach with a single corner or defensive back coaching job under his belt, has been tasked with transforming the Longhorns' cornerback room. His appointment in 2025 was met with skepticism, but Orphey has since injected youth and energy into the position, with impressive results.
One of Orphey's first moves was to trust true freshman Graceson Littleton, who started all year and showed promise despite being targeted 58 times, allowing 38 receptions and 388 yards. Orphey's board also features strong relationships and joint interest from the likes of Trenton Blaylock, Montre Jackson, and Dhillon McGee. In the old world of recruiting, Orphey might be bringing in 4-5 CBs in this class.
While the eyeballs on this Texas defense will be trained on Colin Simmons, Rasheem Biles, and rising stars like Lance Jackson, the real up-and-coming gem might just be standing on the sideline. Orphey's innovative approach and trust in young players have already paid dividends, and his impact on the Longhorns' defense is only just beginning. In my opinion, Orphey's success with the transfer portal and recruiting is a testament to his ability to identify and develop talent, and his impact on the Longhorns' defense could be significant in the coming years.
